A versatile, space-optimizing bench system with various configurations, Island gives in-between areas a collaborative, functional use. Designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Island takes advantage of a non-productive area by maximizing the surrounding layout and transforming it into an available space. The understated design creates a central focal point for high-traffic collaborative environments by inviting passersby to sit, perch or lounge.
“The concept was designed to encourage relaxed social interactions, impromptu meetings, or a pause between journeys. A place to linger and recharge, bringing about productivity or rest.” – Erwan Bouroullec
Island is comprised of long modular units supported by a steel frame and panels of CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) and optional upholstered cushions. With single, double-depth, and continuing units, the system is easily scalable and expandable as communities grow.
Various configurations, colors, textiles, and add-ons can be mixed and matched to create a range of solutions. External and internal partitions can act as backrests and various-sized tables, while integrated charging modules provide points of engagement. Easy to dismantle and rebuild when cleaning, the units are hygienic and ideal for busy areas – and the materials are high-quality and sustainable.
